How to Choose the Best Meditation for You

AHMbackcover copyIf meditation is so good for us, why can it feel so hard to get started?

You’ve most likely seen reports listing many benefits from meditation, recently have been scientifically proven to produce long-lasting improvements in mental cognition, problem-solving, and even increases in brain cell growth after just a few weeks of meditating for 20 minutes a day. Scientific interest in this topic has been steadily growing with no slow-down in sight; Google scholar lists over 5,000 studies citing benefits of meditation that have been published in the first seven months of 2015.

Some of the advantages of meditation include: reduction of stress which in turn boosts the immune system, energy levels, and sense of wellbeing and equanimity; growth of grey cells in the brain and the hippocampus, contributing to better cognitive functioning and problem solving; lengthened telomeres, contributing to greater longevity and overall health.

In addition to these and hundreds of more proven benefits of meditation, people who meditate also find themselves surrounded with happy coincidences and delightful synchronicity. Things just seem to go their way.

So how can we get started meditating, when it’s something we’ve never done before?

Overcome Inner Resistance

As in all matters of health and wellbeing, we can be our own best friends and supporters on a path to improvement, or we can be self-saboteurs. Since meditation is turning out to be as important to good health as sleep, diet, and exercise, it’s important to find ways to ensure we make time for it in our daily lives. And just like choosing diet and exercise programs that work best for you, a meditation program will be most rewarding and effective when it’s well-suited to your individual strengths, style, and preferences. And when it’s fun!

I’ve found that one of the best ways for me to stick with my commitment to daily meditation is to practice the types of meditation I most enjoy. There are so many types of meditation to choose from–yet I know I’ll actually do the ones that feel just right for me, because I feel like they’re actually fun! This tactic is a bit like “whistling while you work,” but it’s actually even better than that, because when I choose types of meditation I like to do, meditation isn’t a bit like work!

Create Your Favorite Meditations

Here’s a quick way to zero in on finding the best meditation technique for you. First, choose a favorite physically relaxing activity, and then select a favorite mental focus. When you combine these two, you’ll have a customized meditation technique that is just right for you! To get started, honestly complete two sentences:  (1) One of my favorite ways to relax is _________________ and (2) I most enjoy focusing my attention on ___________________.

It’s helpful to take a look at examples of some different ways people might answer these questions, to give you an idea of how to construct personalized meditations, starting with the idea of taking a look at your favorite way to relax. And yes, simply doing whatever activity you find most relaxing can count as a form of meditation!

(1) One of my favorite ways to relax is to:

Listen to music
Work in the garden
Close my eyes and breathe deeply
Watch clouds go by
Take a hot bath
Go for a walk

People who enjoy walking can develop their own form of walking meditation. Some people count their breaths as they walk, others simply let go of their worries with each deep breath, and still others observe their thoughts go by without pursuing them. What sort of mental focus appeals to you?

Cynthia Sue LarsonCynthia Sue Larson using two wire coat hangers to dowse energy fields

(2) I most enjoy focusing my attention on:

Letting go of all thoughts
Breathing
Observing the patterns of thoughts
Feeling energy flowing through my body

Whatever mental focus most appeals to you is the one to try. Some people prefer to mull over various thoughts of the day, while others find a sense of nirvana in getting to a place of inner harmonious peace in which thoughts and feelings are cleared away as they show up. Some people feel relaxed by paying attention to bringing awareness to physical activities such as breathing, and take care to breathe more slowly and deeply to the lower abdomen. If you don’t know what you prefer, then try out various ways to focus your attention until you find one that feels best to you.

This is really all there is to it… just combine one of your most relaxing activities with one of your most relaxing mental focuses, and you are meditating! You can even come up with a few favorite meditations, such as one that works best when first awakening, another one to do while showering or brushing your teeth, and yet another to do while taking a walk.

If you try one meditation and find you don’t like it, then try another one. You can find something you like, so don’t give up!

Get a Quantum Jump to Make This an Amazing Year

Image

This can be an amazing year for you, regardless of whether or not you made (or broke) any new year’s resolutions. At this time when the placebo effect has mysteriously doubled in efficacy over the past thirty years as people benefit from sugar pills and “sham” surgery so much that Harvard University has created an institute to study the placebo effect… it’s becoming increasingly clear that there is a powerful mind-matter connection.

The mind-matter connection became crystal clear to me in the early 1980s when I came to UC Berkeley as an undergraduate student in the Physics program. At that time, I was one of the very few caucasians in the Physics program, and one of just a handful of women. When I sat down in one of my first lecture halls, surrounded by hundreds of mostly male Asian students, I experienced a very primal sense of fear–a feeling of “you don’t belong here.”

Fortunately, this was a familiar feeling that I’d learned to deal with before, as just two years earlier I’d been the only girl in my high school physics class. One would think such things don’t really matter, except every time a female high school student walked past the windows in our high school physics class, the teacher stopped talking mid-sentence, silence descended upon the class, and all eyes watched the young lady stroll the length of the classroom as she walked past outside.

I’d learned while taking advanced math classes and physics classes in high school to pretend that “lots of young girls just like you do great in math and science,” and this was the same cheery inner pep talk I gave myself that first year as a Physics major at UC Berkeley.

It turns out such an attitude of “faking it ‘til you make it” is enormously useful for all of us as we get older, as scientific studies show that those of us who harbor negative prejudices about old age are statistically more likely to end up the way we presume older people to be. When a group of people were asked to  describe qualities typically found in the elderly, those who expected people to deteriorate over time were found by researchers in this longitudinal study to suffer just such a fate, whereas those who viewed the elderly in more favorable light were statistically more likely to be found prospering and thriving many years later.

If you’re wondering what can possibly account for people being healed by fake surgeries and sugar pills, and aging according to largely subconsciously held prejudices about old people… you’re not alone.

Fortunately for all of us, we’re now living through one of the most exciting times in the history of the world when our entire way of thinking about ourselves in relation to the world is being transformed. We’re now at the dawn of the Quantum Age, which was officially ushered in back in September 2013 when Google and NASA’s Ames Research Center purchased the first quantum computer, the D-Wave Two, for $17 million. Thanks to a modicum of transparency with the US government financing of part of this project, we can now track some of the progress in quantum programing at the QUantum Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (QUAIL) at NASA.

So what’s the big deal about this being the dawn of the Quantum Age, and how does that relate to this being such a great year for you?

Image

I was inspired to write my newest book, Quantum Jumps: An Extraordinary Science of Happiness and Prosperity, after seeing a convergence in results from a number of scientific studies showing that quantum phenomena such as superposition of states, entanglement, and teleportation are happening on the macroscopic, human scale. The significance of such phenomena was not lost on me, since for the past fifteen years I’ve been conducting surveys and sharing first-hand reports of a wide variety of seemingly inexplicable experiences through the RealityShifters.com web site. What’s truly exciting now is that thanks to findings from a variety of scientific studies, it’s clear that:

  1. We most likely live in a holographic multiverse of interconnected parallel possible worlds, and
  2. Quantum effects are now being regularly observed on the macroscopic scale (so for example, we can witness quantum entanglement in diamonds that we can hold in our hands).

When we consider some of the quantum phenomena we’re now witnessing in the natural world in birds navigational abilities, in the way plants photosynthesize, and even in the way our very own noses work, we begin to see how we are receiving extraordinary insights into how we benefit from quantum entanglement, quantum coherence, and quantum superposition of states in our everyday lives. Nature shows us that quantum processing is built into plants and animals in such a way that provides something akin to intuitive reasoning that is an integral part of optimizing efficiency in a number of ways. Plants are able to instantly determine the most efficient way to transform a photon to stored energy, by doing something akin to simultaneously comparing all possible pathways, and choosing the best.

For us humans, this kind of natural efficiency is a bit like telling ourselves when taking a test, “You know the answer to this,” and then doing significantly better as a result. In fact, scientists have proven that this type of placebo treatment does indeed improve peoples’ test scores.

Put another way, we can consider the ways that quantum effects can improve our daily lives as doing something American psychologist William James once stated as, “If you want a quality, act as if you already have it.”

So one of the best ways to make this year one of your best years yet is simply to tell yourself that is exactly what is happening now. See what happens when you think or say aloud:

This is one of the best years of my life.

And just for good measure, feel free to add my favorite open-ended question:

How good can it get?!

Soul’s Language Q and A with Jennifer Urezzio

I was fortunate to hear about Jennifer Urezzio last August, when I learned about her Know Soul’s Language and The Intuitive Toolbox™ programs. It took me a while before I was able to get some first-hand experience with these programs, and my introduction to Soul’s Language was so fascinating and insightful, I asked Jennifer if she’d be willing to be interviewed by me for my blog. Fortunately for all of us, Ms. Urezzio said, “Yes!” and here are my questions and her answers in a conversation about Soul’s Language.

(1) First of all, thank you so very much for accepting my invitation to be interviewed! I was greatly impressed by my Soul’s Language session with you, which I found to be deeply and profoundly moving as well as inspiring. Would you please describe what Soul’s Language is, and how it’s helpful to people?

Soul Language is putting tangible to the intangible – Soul.  It allows individuals to put into words what they know to be true inside of themselves and then helps them create a conscious connection with their Soul. It has help individuals feel a deeper connection with themselves and therefore the Divine.

(2) What inspired you to create Soul Language?

I didn’t really have a choice. J I asked a big question of the Divine: how to I use my gifts and talents, how do I connect with my Soul in a deeper way and how to I find my community. The answer that I heard via Divine guidance was and is Soul Language. I haven’t stopped asking questions.

(3) How are Souls Languages similar to and different from Jungian archetypes?

I believe that the Divine provides us with information about ourselves in a number of ways and as the consciousness grows so does that information. There is always going to be “standard” archetypes: nurturer, pioneer, teacher, etc. So of course, these are included in the Language categories. The Soul is complex so we can’t really put it in a box. Soul Language includes some of this information but the key is connection and Soul Language provides the opportunity for individuals to communicate on a deep level with their Soul.

(4) You’ve said each person has three Soul’s Languages. Could you describe these in layman’s terms that we can relate to regarding how they operate in our lives?

The three categories are: mission, how you fuel that mission or how you will be known here and your Soulful personality.

(5) As I understand it, one of the key benefits provided by Soul’s Languages lies in coordinating the way a person’s Soul’s Languages interact–harmoniously or inharmoniously. Could you give examples?

My Soulful personality or Tone Language is Graceful Warrior. When I’m in unconditional love for myself I understand that compassion is my greatest tool and talent for myself and for others. When I’m in conditional love or inharmoniously expressing this Language I’m a war with everything. That being a war is very painful. It creates conflict, pain and turmoil in my life and in my business.

(6) Do people usually keep the same Soul’s Languages throughout their lifetimes, or do some people adopt new or different Soul’s Languages in different stages of life?

Your Soul Languages are yours this life time. It would be very confusing to have our Soul Languages keep changing. You can spend a life time getting to know yourself, without having the information keep changing on you.

(7) It seems that knowing how one’s own Soul’s Language interacts with the Soul’s Languages of other people could provide tools that help improve communications. Do you offer insights for people who come to you seeking Soul’s Language advice for friends, colleagues, or family members?

I have community members that know their entire immediate family’s Soul Languages. All my close friends know my Soul Languages and I know theirs. When you understand how a person is operating consciously or unconsciously it helps not to take situations so personal. So when I work with a community member that knows the Soul Languages of that person that they might have conflict, I remind them of the unconscious behavior of that particular Language.

Also, I noticed that people “collect” certain Soul Languages. We tend to surround ourselves with the same type of energy.

(8) Soul’s Language seems like it could be a powerful catalyst for spiritual and personal growth. What kinds of feedback have you gotten from people who’ve come to you for Soul’s Language readings?

The number of feedback is thank you for putting words to what I know deep down inside of me. I also hear that individuals have a deeper sense of peace, acceptance and love for themselves and others.

(9) Is Soul’s Language still evolving and expanding… or do you have any new projects in the works?

Soul Language is a living, breathing organism. Just like Soul. We now identify a person’s business Languages and sacred partnership Languages. We are also always creating tools that help people connect in a deeper way to themselves and the Divine.

(10) Thank you so much for sharing so much information about you and your wonderful work. How do you recommend people get in touch with you to learn more about Soul’s Language?

Get your copy now

What’s so special about this book?

People are calling Reality Shifts “Outstanding!” “A magical read!” “Insightful and uplifting!”

Reality Shifts is the only book that addresses the what, why and how regarding the way consciousness–in the form of our thoughts and feelings–literally changes the physical world. Most of us have experienced garden variety types of reality shifts, such as missing socks when we do the laundry, or wondering why our keys or wallet are not where we know we put them–and sometimes, we also experience shifts in time. What few people realize is that the very same types of “spooky action at a distance” that physicists expect to see at the quantum level of reality also occasionally occur on the large-scale level in our daily lives. People and things have thus been witnessed to appear and disappear, transport, and transform… which is what Reality Shifts is all about.

How Can Reading Reality Shifts Improve Your Life?

Reality Shifts helps you reassess your assumptions about reality and consciousness in ways that positively shift your ability to envision and manifest much more positive experiences in your life. Whether you read through the book sequentially, or open and read pages at random, Reality Shifts opens doors to new thought and elevates you to a higher level of consciousness than you were before.

Read Reality Shifts and learn how to:

    • Live lucidly to create a life you love
    • Positively influence the future and the past
    • Transform sabotaging beliefs into strength

What are People Saying About Reality Shifts?

“When I hand this book to people, people are hooked. You read it, and it puts a giggle in your heart! It brings you to a higher level of frequency than where you began. This book… you have to have it on your shelf!” — Tazz Powers

“Cynthia Sue Larson helps restore a sense of majesty and wonder to our everyday world.
If you think science has explained away the magic of existence,
you need seriously to read this book.” — Larry Dossey, M.D.

“Ever wondered where that missing sock went when you last searched the clothes dryer? Thought about why those keys you so carefully tucked into your jacket pocket suddenly disappeared only to be found underneath the cushion of your favorite television sofa? If so then you have experienced what Cynthia Sue Larson calls a Reality Shift. In her book of that title subtitled When Consciousness Changes the Physical World, she explains in clear and unambiguous language just what these reality shifts are, why they occur, and how they can be used to influence and change your life for the better. Larson even goes into how the latest ideas from quantum physics can help us understand these shifts and most importantly believe in them as part of our reality, not just our imagination.” — Fred Alan Wolf, Ph.D.

“Modern science has now addressed the problem of consciousness. We each experience consciousness every day, in some of the myriad and fascinating ways described in REALITY SHIFTS. But no one yet quite understands why this is so. Speculations, theories and experiments from quantum science have now been entered into the debate which suggest that our world is far more mystical, complex, interactive and even humorous than the sterile, mechanistic dogma of classical scientific thought. Read, enjoy, be amazed, ponder REALITY SHIFTS” — Edgar Mitchell, D.Sc., founder of Institute of Noetic Sciences

Self Hypnosis Q and A with Eldon Taylor

A few years back, I was delighted to come across the work of New York Times best selling author, Eldon Taylor. I was delighted to see the way Taylor so generously shared the most powerful insights from his years of experience in corporate marketing, such as what’s really going on in subliminal marketing all around us today. There are hidden messages in many of the magazine, billboard, TV and radio advertisements that most of us are never fully aware of, and this mysterious realm of subconscious conversations piqued my curiosity.

I’m so grateful to be able to share some questions and answers today with Eldon Taylor, who is here to talk with us about his brand new book, Self-Hypnosis and Subliminal Technology: A How-to Guide for Personal-Empowerment Tools You Can Use Anywhere.

You have been called the “Master of the Mind” and “one of the world’s foremost experts in preconscious processing.” How did you became interested in hypnosis and subliminal communication?
I think I have always been interested in the power of the mind; early on I read a lot of books on the subject and attended numerous school specializing in hypnosis. However, my interest really took off in the 80s. I was a practicing criminalist at the time and I frequently ran lie-detection examinations. One of the problems in lie-detection tests is in eliminating the inconclusives—some people are so nervous about the procedure itself that, even though they are innocent, they can give readings that would indicate deception. On the other hand, some people are very experienced at taking lie-detection tests and they use counter-measures. I was looking for a way to make the innocent person more relaxed and the guilty person, more tense.
I came across some research regarding law enforcement using subliminal audio programs in a hostage situation, and although I could never verify this, it did give me the incentive to explore this area a whole lot more.  I contacted numerous companies who were producing subliminal self-help programs and I discovered that the whole field was rife with mis-information. Quite frankly, many of these companies simply did not understand the process themselves, and as a result they were producing products with no retrievable subliminal content, poorly designed affirmations, or affirmations presented in such a way that the subconscious mind could only perceive it as being gibberish.
To cut a long story short, I did my own research and created my own subliminal program for use in my lie detection practice. The results were phenomenal! My inconclusives pretty much disappeared and I found myself launching a whole new career. If subliminal communication could be so effective in this scenario, what else could we achieve with it? I created more subliminal audio programs and allowed them to be tested by numerous independent institutions and researchers (such as scientists at Stanford University). The results were all positive.
My fascination with hypnosis followed a very similar path. Initially I used hypnosis  for forensic applications, but as I learned more and more about the power of the mind, I started using hypnosis as a tool for personal growth.
As my reputation grew, I was called in as an expert court witness with regards to both hypnosis and subliminal communication.

How do address concerns that subliminal communication has been proven to be ineffective, and that laws now exist, banning its use?
Now that is an interesting question! Why would you need laws banning their use if they have been proven ineffective. And if there were laws banning their use, how come they are being used so much today—in music, entertainment, movies and even during election cycles.
The fact is, there has been a concerted effort, by those who use these methods the most, to prevent laws from being created that would ban the use of subliminals. This is something I experienced first hand when we tried to introduce a bill in Utah to allow subliminals to be used only with informed consent. I was amazed at the number of major advertising companies who sent representatives to fight against this bill.
The closest thing we have today is a codification by the FCC that says subliminals should not be used. However, where the station may lose their broadcast license if they ‘knowingly’ air material containing subliminal information, there is no other punishment attached to this.  As a result, even when George Bush’s campaign was discovered using a subliminal ad against Al Gore, nothing could be done about it—the stations broadcasting the commercial did not ‘know’ about the subliminal content, and there was no punishment that could be levied against Bush’s team for having included it.  What is more interesting here is, subsequent research done at Adelphi University clearly showed that this ad would have influenced the voter!
If you do a quick search at youtube for  subliminal ads, you will be amazed at how many there are and how frequently they are still being used. By turning the whole field into a joke, the mind manipulators are allowed to carry on using these techniques unhindered!

Some people assert that hypnosis is just a sci-fi myth. Is it really possible that people can be made to do someone else’s bidding?
Hypnosis is very real and has been researched extensively by the U.S. government.  By slowing down brain wave activity it is possible to access memories you thought you had forgotten, change your feelings about an experience and prime yourself to act in a way of your choosing at some future event.
The fact is, everyone (except the very young and those with some cognitive deficiency that does not allow them to concentrate) can be hypnotized.  However, you cannot be made to do something that would go against your own inner standards/values. If you were pushed in this way during a hypnosis session, you would simply come out of hypnosis!

What is the relationship between hypnosis and subliminal communication, and why do you think they are vital tools for self-improvement?
Both hypnosis and subliminal technology deal directly with the subconscious mind, which is the repository of all of your experiences, feelings and reaction.  These subconscious beliefs play a definite role in your ability to achieve goals. For example, if you were brought up to believe that ‘money is the source of all evil,’ and then you had the conscious desire to be rich and successful, this subconscious belief would keep finding ways to sabotage you.  Or maybe your outer goal is to lose weight, but somewhere in your past you were hurt by a significant other, so you put on extra weight in order to avoid attracting unwanted attention. Until you deal with some of these subconscioius beliefs, until your inner goals are in line with your outer goals, success will always elude you.
Hypnosis works by slowing down brainwave activity, which makes it easier to recover memories, to access your own subconscious beliefs and also to reprogram yourself for success.  Subliminal communication works by bypassing conscious awareness and all of its defense mechanisms.  It changes your self-talk (the beliefs held by your subconscious) from the inside out. As your self-talk changes, so does your life experience. It’s important to note, the current data suggests that approx. 90% of your choices are actually made by the nucleus accumbens, the area of the brain that is in our subconscious domain.

Can you share some of your greatest success stories using hypnosis?
I think my most amazing experience with hypnosis was when I was doing this for a client who needed to learn pain management. One day, after a normal session, she suddenly began to channel a Chinese entity! It seems he had some information specifically for me, but I had to send the audio recording off to the language department at the University of Utah before I could learn what he was saying!
However, that really is an anomalous kind of event! I think, not counting that one, I have used forensic hypnosis to assist a victim in providing identifying information after he was robbed at gun-point. Out of hypnosis, all he could remember was the size of the gun, but under hypnosis he even managed to remember the car and a partial license plate.
I have also used hypnosis for child birth, when a friend of mine asked for help as she wanted to minimize the use of drugs for pain.

What else is hypnosis good for?
There are so many areas in which hypnosis has been used successfully. These range from weight loss and smoking, to pain management and stress, from enhancing sports performance to enhancing learning abilities, from self-healing to sex enhancement, and from meditation to past life regression.

I’d love to know if you have any amazing success stories as a result of using subliminal communication–are there any stories you care to share?
All success stories are amazing, simply because they have improved the quality of that person’s life. However, some of the most fascinating stories would have to include the individual who credited using a program for Prosperity and Abundance for finding a winning lottery ticket, or the person who trades on the stock exchange and always does better when working with this same program.  And I have received a number of letters from people in remission from cancer, who attribute this to using the Spiritual Healing for Cancer program that I offer.

What else can you use subliminal programs for?
Again, this list is as wide as those for hypnosis. Basically, if you do not believe you can succeed, then this belief will prevent you from becoming the best that you can be.  The best part of my job is the many letters I receive, on a daily basis, telling me how much their lives have improved using my InnerTalk subliminal programs. I love hearing from the mother who is happy that her child is no longer afraid of school, or the student who has just passed their law school Bar exam, or the Olympic athlete who just won a medal. I have received letters regarding relationship, health, spirituality, better life, business and addictions. All of these are areas users have reported improvements in, which have resulted in an increased quality of life.

You say in your book that self-hypnosis and subliminal communication are the best self-help tools. Do you use them yourself, and if so, how?
Yes, I use them myself virtually every day! The subliminal programs are easy to use as they can just be played in the background as you go about your day. Sometimes I will be working on something specific, say avoiding catching a cold that is going around. In this instance I use the Accelerated Healing and Well-Being program. When I am not working on something specific, then I like to keep myself ‘tuned up’ and will use a program such as Optimism Plus or Quantum Younging. I actually have a number of programs that I have put on my i-phone, which of course has built in speakers. This way I can keep my phone in its holster and benefit from the subliminal programs whatever I am doing.
I generally use self-hypnosis twice a day. I try to take time out to meditate every day and self-hypnosis can really speed this process up. I can achieve in a 10 minute session what would take me half an hour if I did not use self-hypnosis. I also use self-hypnosis last thing at night. It is a great way to go to sleep and also for keeping myself focused on my goals while I am sleeping.

In your book, Self-Hypnosis and Subliminal Technology, you provide step-by-step instructions for learning self-hypnosis and for creating your own subliminal program.  Is this really all you need, or is this just an introduction to more courses and classes the reader needs to go through before they can achieve any practical benefits?
No, I have tried to make the course as complete as possible. I explain the theory behind both processes, provide detailed information on how to do it all yourself, and give you examples of how you can take these techniques even further. The book comes with an audio CD so that you can experience all of this as well, so there can be no confusion about whether or not you are doing it correctly. Once you have been through this course, you will know:
•    The 5 different steps for putting yourself into a hypnotic state;
•    Several visualization, induction and deepening techniques, including deepening to eliminate distraction;
•    All about post-hypnotic cues, affirmations, self-suggestions, how to uncover information and find the positive in negative experiences;
•    How hypnosis can be used to create new habits, uncover hidden conflicts that often cause self-destructive patterns and discover new solutions to old problems; and
•    Even how to use hypnosis for expanding conscious awareness, out of body awareness, regression-therapy, and automatic-writing/drawing!
You will also know:
•    How subliminal communication works;
•    Why it is so much more powerful than simply using affirmations;
•    How to write effective affirmations for subliminal delivery;
•    The importance of choosing the right soundtrack; and
•    How you can create your own custom subliminal program, for whatever goal you seek to achieve!
I also provide plenty of examples of how to use these two techniques in your own self-improvement program.
