“The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”   – Mark Twain

If you remember seeing media coverage of Nelson Mandela having died in prison in the 1980s, and you’re wondering why he’s just this month been reported dead again, you’re in good company. Mandela is one of the most commonly discussed celebrities who has been seen alive after having been reported dead. When we personally witness disparities between events we remember having happened and what reliable physical evidence suggests has occurred, we might at first feel a sense of dissonance. Fortunately, we need not stay confused, since noticing the differences between our memories and evidence in our current reality allows us to gain valuable direct experience of how malleable reality can truly be. Recent scientific discoveries suggest it’s quite likely that both this so-called “Mandela Effect,” also known as the “Alive Again” phenomena, are not new, as shamans and spiritual teachers from every continent and age of humankind have described for millennia.

The Mechanism Behind the Mandela Effect

We are fortunate to be alive at a time when scientists from several different branches of physics are converging on the idea that we live in a holographic multiverse… AND that everything including you and me have a truly quantum nature. When we put these two big ideas together, we see the mechanism by which we can understand and appreciate how things like intuition, synchronicity, the placebo effect, and spontaneous remission can transpire.

Evidence supporting the concept of many parallel universes being interconnected comes from UC Berkeley’s Raphael Bousso, whose view of reality has been gaining support ever since last year’s discovery of the Higgs boson. And there is further good news for those wondering, “Where are these other parallel universes?” Some of the first hard evidence of other universes was found just this year by theoretical physicist Laura Mersini-Houghton of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Carnegie Mellon professor Richard Holman, through cosmic background radiation data collected by the European Space Agency’s Planck telescope, which indicates the presence of other external universes to our own at the very moment of the Big Bang.

What Happens in the Quantum Realm Doesn’t Stay in the Quantum Realm

In much the same way that some people prefer that “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” many physicists have hoped that the weirdness known to happen in the quantum realm would remain safely confined there. This appears to not be the case, as evidenced in recent ground-breaking laboratory experiments over the past few years. Increasing numbers of studies with macroscopic scale objects, such as diamonds, are consistently and repeatedly demonstrating such distinctly quantum behaviors as entanglement–which Albert Einstein once called, “spooky action at a distance.”

Other behaviors previously presumed to reside exclusively within the quantum scale including: superposition of states, coherence, and teleportation are also being witnessed on the macroscopic scale. This is happening to the point that a growing consensus is beginning to form amongst physicists, such as those surveyed at a recent conference that you and I and everyone and everything around us exists in a superposition of states.

This means that in one possible reality, you have not made a decision that resulted in your catching a cold, but in another possible reality, you have. We can expect to occasionally experience quantum jumps from one possible reality to another, particularly when we are aware that such leaps are possible. These jumps from one reality to another can be a lot of fun, as some of the world’s quantum jumping experts can attest.

And who, might you ask, are the world’s quantum jumping experts? Such experts include most of the world’s top athletes, medical miracle experiencers, heroes, survivors of close brushes with death, experienced meditators, beneficiaries of the placebo effect, and people experienced with hypnosis and lucid dreaming have experienced leaps to better possible realities. These people often trust intuition, and benefit from a sense of there being a connectedness between themselves and everyone and everything else.

Evidence of Possible Futures & Pasts

As the saying goes, “extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.” But how can we find evidence demonstrating that alternate histories occur, when typically the only “proof” we have that a change has occurred resides in our own memories? One way to collect such proof is to rapidly document peoples’ experiences immediately following highly memorable historic events like the Kennedy assassination, the Challenger space shuttle explosion, or Princess Diana’s death. Such flashbulb memories provide reference points by which the same people can later be asked about.

Researchers Ulric Neisser and Nicole Harsch at Emory University investigated flashbulb memories of students immediately following the Challenger space shuttle explosion by collecting handwritten student reactions immediately following the disaster. When they followed up two and a half years later with the very same students, Neisser and Harsch were startled to find that students’ accounts of where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news were different from what they’d initially described. One student said, “That’s my handwriting, but that’s not what happened.”

Kindness Matters

Discrepancies between memories also often appear amongst people who were all together for a particular event, but later remember what transpired very differently. Chances are pretty good that you’ve encountered disagreements with people you’d usually consider competent and aware… except for when they insist something happened some way you know for sure couldn’t be true.

If we didn’t live in a holographic multiverse in which we’re all venturing in various directions to experience a multitude of different possible futures and pasts, we wouldn’t find the tremendous divergence between peoples’ memories. As we enter the Quantum Age, it’s time that we stop calling such differences in memory “false recollections,” in favor of “alternate recollections,” indicating respect for the fact that each and every one of us exists in a superimposed state, with access to many possible alternate histories, presents, and futures.

And most importantly, it’s time we truly show respect for one another and our multitudes of alternate histories and recollections.

  1. Hi Cynthia. Interesting story. I have heard George Noory discuss this as well. But what’s significant to ME is your mention of the Higgs boson! The last time I checked, it was sort of a Holy Grail for particle physics and had not been found yet. How could I have missed such a significant event when I follow science news every day? I would not have missed it, unless this is a case of information overload.

“last year’s discovery of the Higgs boson…”

    • Wow, that is so interesting you hadn’t heard of the discovery of the Higgs boson! Since you’re following science news every day, it’s entirely possible that you’ve just made a quantum jump into this reality in which now the Higgs boson was found last year! Fascinating!

      • Hi Cynthia. I was shocked again today by another previously unknown celebrity, the passing of Whitney Houston–a couple of years ago, apparently. I just do not recall news of her death at all. Last I can remember, she was in the news for domestic problems. I feel sometimes like I don’t even recognize the world anymore. 🙂

  2. I just purchased Quantum Jumps and can’t wait to dive into it! Alternate realities have been my interest for many years. I have your other books (all except the Dream Weaver book) and appreciate your writing style and your easy to understand scientific references.

    • Thank you, Amy! There are some easy to understand scientific references in my book, “Karen Kimball and the Dream Weaver’s Web,” too, as at one point in the story, Karen Kimball views what it looks like to choose between possible parallel realities. 😉

  3. Fascinating as always Cindy.

  4. I remember wtching a documentary about Jane Goodall wherein she was killed by poachers acording to the story line. So glad she is in a world with me still. Here is a link from ask.com http://www.ask.com/question/how-did-jane-goodall-die where many people have asked for information about her death… Thank you Cinthia for bringing this anomalous phenomena to our attention!

    • Wow, this is truly awesome to see how many people have been asking when and how Jane Goodall died! This shows more than just a few people (including me) remember an alternate history in which she passed away. I am so very glad we are now in a reality in which she’s still alive!

      • Or, you’re all confusing Jane Goodall with Diane Fossey who was killed by poachers. definitely not an alternate history but rather poor memory.

      • Thanks for your comment! I can certainly appreciate your point of view, particularly if you don’t have a memory as some of us do of having first heard the shocking news of Dian Fossey’s murder, and then hot on the heels of that horrid news, heard that Jane Goodall had also died–also murdered. It was truly too awful to believe, and I assure you I did not confuse these two ladies. In fact, upon hearing the news of Goodall’s passing, I felt outrage, with a sense of, “How DARE anyone murder two of the world’s top primate researchers?!? This is not OK!” I would not have been so upset, nor so outraged in the event of mere confusion of identities–something that would have been easily cleared up, had it been the case at the time. And now, thank heavens, I’m in a reality in which many people have no memory whatsoever of Jane Goodall also having died shortly after Dian Fossey.

    HI Cynthia ,

I thought at the time of Nelson Mandela’s death. that it was just what earth needed and right on time. Here is a man who is loved the world over, experienced much and yet darkness could not hold him down no matter what. He was wrongly imprisoned and labeled many bad things, just as we have recently done to these new brave ones stepping up right now to descale the kettle that is earth. They have been labeled and imprisoned too. His death is a timely event showing those who have eyes and ears that what is being done now has been done and survived – reminder and a grand one for us all !

    • Thanks, Joni! Mandela’s death in December 2013 feels so much more special and right than his death so many decades ago when I first heard about it during the time he’d been incarcerated. When I later heard Nelson Mandela was still alive, I was really confused… wondering how this could be possible, but feeling so very grateful he would now be able to share his wonderful example of living his life with more people, and do an even better job of getting his message out to the world. I was quite moved that by his being able to live out a much longer life, he was really showing the world something extraordinary.

  6. Dearest Cynthia,
Yes ! I experienced this as well !
All my love and blessings, Russell.

Cynthia, is it not possible that steve biko and diane fossey triggered dreams that went beyond the normal limits of vividness,so much so, as to simulate reality ?

    • Many things are possible. I suggest focusing on the significance of alternate histories and what they tell us, even if deaths are not involved. For example, the fact that many of us remember a time when American Thanksgiving was always on the 3rd Thursday each November–and some of noticed a couple of years ago that suddenly “Thanksgiving Thursday is always on the 4th Thursday in November.” Those of us that notice recognize there’s much less time now between Thanksgiving and the Winter holidays, and I also notice that International Aura Awareness Day that I established for the 4th Saturday in November is now, most unfortunately, sharing Thanksgiving weekend–a very busy time for most families. I had not chosen to put it so close to Thanksgiving, so I know for sure there’s been a change–although there aren’t indicators other than our own memories of the alternate history many of us recall.

      • I also remember Thanksgiving always being on the 3rd Thursday. I thought I was the only one who remembered it that way! This seems like a major timeline jump.

  8. Vivek narain said:

Agreed whole heartedly, but is not simulating reality the in thing? a collective consciousness simulating an alternate timeline, deaths and other events included, ultra vivid dreams being the precursor to create quantum anti zeno effect bringing down curtains on previous timeline.

    • Quantum logic gates are time reversible, which helps explain how it can be possible for Nature to utilize quantum processes, which it does so elegantly for such things as photosynthesis. What this means to those of us who witness reality shifts and quantum jumps is that we often see reality shifts go back and forth from one state to another… and then back again. This means that for a while we might be noticing, “Now Thanksgiving Thursday is happening on the 4th Thursday in November. How odd!” and perhaps in a few years time we may observe, “Well, what do you know? Thanksgiving Thursday is back to the 3rd Thursday in November again! Amazing!”

I remember Mandela dying prior to his most recent death, but it wasn’t in jail or in the 1980s. I remember hearing about his death from cancer in Fall of 2001 in my senior English class. I was astonished to hear that he was alive when reports of his poor health circulated right before his “real” death. My husband also recalls hearing about Mandela dying from cancer (not in prison) likely around the same time I do. I wonder if some people who think Mandela died in prison are actually getting Mandela mixed up with Steven Biko. Most Americans aren’t well informed on South African civil rights leaders. Also, the film Cry Freedom might have played a role in the problem. I know their names are very different, but some people are ignorant and still others are just racists who may think all black men look alike. Just an idea for you.

    • Thanks for sharing what you recall regarding Nelson Mandela dying from cancer in Fall 2001. There can be more than one or two alternate histories, and your memory of Mandela dying of cancer in 2001, while I recall him dying in jail many years before that and again recently are part of this tapestry of ever-changing pasts. I personally wouldn’t confuse Biko with Mandela, since Peter Gabriel wrote the song “Biko” that was part of his 1980 album, and a song I heard fairly often when it first came out and through the 1980s. I do agree with you regarding the importance of making sure, when considering the possibility of alternate histories, that people aren’t simply confusing people or facts.

A couple of years ago during The Royal Wedding (William and Kate) while we watched the event on the tv, mom recalled watching Princess Diana’s funeral with my dad when I was two years old (around 2001 or 2002 since I was born on 1998). She vividly described that night -even telling me that she remembered having buttered popcorn and cheap wine while she watched tv- and the details about the funeral itself are exactly as it happened. But when I googled Princess Diana it turns out she died on 1997, a year before I was born. Then when I asked my father, he said he was visiting his sister in Miami when that happened, and the year was 1997. I always thought my mom was just confused but now that I’ve read about the Mándelas effect makes me wonder if that is what is happening to my mom.

    • Thank you for sharing this–and yes, the Mandela Effect could certainly explain how your mom may recall a different reality. I’d love to hear from others who may have also remember hearing the news of Princess Diana having died at a different time than the current official historical date of August 31, 1997.
